Infill for synthetic turf

Every sports field is unique in itself. It has a different purpose, that is why the type of  turf is different. A classical sports field with synthetic turf is built on a base which will allow water permeability and the drainage of water. With this in mind, it is filled with material which is very frequently likely to be stones, gravel, rubble, mineral materials or a compound of the above. In addition to this, there can be special drainage canals. The next layer is a rubber layer or so called resilient E-layer. It is responsible for the sports characteristics of the sports field, that is, a shock absorption, the appropriate re-bounding energy and the comfort in the game. Depending on the type of the sports field and the kind of sports disciplines to be played on it and the individual requirements, other different types of bases can be used additionally, taking care of, for example, appropriately strained carpet of artificial grass. The construction and the type of base under the artificial grass should be consulted for every individual case at the very beginning as the first step, with the producer of the artificial turf.

To the rubber layer, with the help of special tapes and adhesive is attached the "carpet" made of artificial grass. Next is the step of its infilling, in simple words, its task is to imitate the ground. This is done In the New modern grasses, the so called 3rd generation ones is fulfilled by sand or small rubber granules of a decided shape.  The layer of sand is responsible for the water drainage, on the other hand the responsibility of the rubber granules is to ensure good resilience to the base and safe playing. Both of these  two layers additionally, maintain the  vertical setting of the artificial grass blades and prevent its crushing and deformation.

The material from which the rubber infill is produced is vulcanised and granulated compound based on EPDM, SBR or TPE with the size of the granules from 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm or 2.5 mm. The infill may come from new rubber compounds (so called Virgin) as well as from recycling. The original material has its advantages, that it has neutral  smell/odour, does not get heated and does not stain.

The height of the infill depends upon the type of grass and sports field and the kind of material used. The usual standard infill is from 1/2 to 2/3 of the height of grass blades. The amount of material used depends, to great extent, upon the size and type of granules used. For a typical football pitch one can use an average of 4 - 8 kg of infill per m2 depending upon the type of infill used. In order to lower the costs of constructing sports fields Unirubber also possesses in its offer a modern infill of lower density (LD) and thus decreasing the weight of infill. For all those who care for environmental  protection we have ecological granules INFILL  ECO which conform to the highest environmental protection  recommendations according to the ÖISS norms, related to the soil pollution (http://www.oeiss.org/).

In order to keep our sports field  in service for a long time, one should take appropriate care of the synthetic grass. To counteract excessive  tamping down of the granules in the grass the surface is agitated and combed from time to time, using a special brush. "Dry cleaning" of the infill is also recommended once in a span of few years in order to remove the dirt that has accumulated like leaves or bird excrements.
